Posted by: Purushottam Thakur
We are all aware about Internet safety that what is it and why this is important. Hackers are always trying to get access to other people’s data, which is in his Computer or on a network. So I have written something special about the online and offline security, which will help you to secure your data. At this time if you want to be safe on the web then your computer should be secure. You can’t surf the internet securely if any malware, virus, etc is installed on your own device (Smartphone, Computer).
So this is the time to protect your computer, because these day a lot of important works we are doing on the Internet, including Shopping, Money Transfer, Banking, Mailing, etc and so that is the point. This time internet safety is our prime duty so you should aware of your security. This not meant to be Internet security only involves our web browser; this also involves network security by which we are surfing. So this is why I written this articles.
Many ways regarding to this topic can be found on the internet but many of us not following these topics. But this article is recommended because of I written this after some experiments. I am not sure what do you think about the internet safety but I think you need this in anyways. So follow the below mentioned ways and steps, which are verified, trustable, understandable, informative and easy to implement. More of these tips are often ignored by us but this is not a good idea so browse the web safely following all the tips.
1st Tip: Enabling Firewall on the Computer.
Do you know what a firewall program is? Because I know many of us listened about it, which normally located in the security settings in a computer but don’t know about it that what is the work of this feature, really? For those who don’t know, normally this is a kind of security program which has rights and ability to control the whole of incoming and outgoing network traffic. Which authorises the barrier between a secured, safe and trusted internal network to other network? Firewall is active as default but you should regularly check for it. So this is my opinion to have your computer Firewall enabled, to prevent and block other persons entering in your computer, from the outside. If you are on windows you can just see that what is it, going to ‘Control Panel\System and Security\Windows Firewall’ in your windows computer. Follow the below steps as shown in picture to enable the firewall in your windows computer.
1. Power on your computer if not then click on start button located in left corner.

2. After that find the option ‘Control Panel’ and click on it. This opens a new window. Find the ‘System and Security’ option and click on it.

3. Find the option ‘Windows Firewall’ and Click on it.

4. Now Find the ‘Turn Windows Firewall on or off’ option in the left bar and click on it.

5. After Clicking on it you will get many options but you only have to click on ‘Turn on Windows Firewall’. Remember there are two options to enable. One is for private network and second is for public network, so don’t forget to enable both of them as shown in below screenshot.

2nd Tip: Using an Easy but Hard Password.
Every time hackers feels easy to hack. Because we are using easy to guess passwords for our online or offline security. So creating a right password is an important thing, if we are talking about our online or web security. Many of us still using a single password for every account. Why? Because we are not a computer, which can remember everything what have been said. So this is a step which is strongly recommended to secure maximum of protection which minimizes the risk up to 60%.
So how to create a strong password which will be easy for me and hard for others? Well! Password should be a mix of numbers, uppercase letters, lowercase letters and special characters. Check a previous article to create a great password. How to choose an easy but hard password.

3rd Tip: Encrypting Files or Folders in Computer.
This is a function of windows, which will secure your data. Enabling this feature will increase your safety of your data in windows computers from the miss use. And this is simple to do from your own computer. To know more about this function see this Wikipedia page. So simply this function makes your data harder to read by other peoples. Lets follow the below guide to enable it in your computer to get a next level of protection.
1. Choose the file or folder, which you want to be secured and right click on it, and then select properties. After clicking on it you will see look like this screenshot.
2. Simply click on General tab then click on Advanced button. Like this below screenshot.
3. Check Mark that box, then click on OK. Like below.
4. To confirm click on Apply button after clicking on OK button. See below picture.
So that is the steps of encrypting file or folder in computer. You can encrypt as many files or folders as you want. You can also choose multiple files or folders at once.

4th Tip: Using a Latest or Updated Browser.
The reason behind choosing an Updated browser is that, this is easy to hack your files for a hacker. So if you are using an outdated browser, then you have to really update it, because your outdated browser doesn’t identify the latest threats and viruses. So always check for the updates or set your browser to update itself if there is any update available. Remember only update your browser from the original source, because many hackers also giving their modified browsers.

5th Tip: Using The Updated Software(s).
I know, many of you have a question, that how an outdated software can harm your computer? For those, I don’t know more about it, but have a big reason. We know, that many of our installed software using internet, to work with. So simply this is harmful as an outdated web browser, because that software also browses the web for their purpose, such as updating itself and upgrading to latest definitions. If you are not updating your software(s) regularly then it’s easy for hackers to hack your system. So always update your software(s) as it tells you that there is an update available.

6th Tip: Always Using Updated Version of Antivirus.
Antivirus saves our system from hacking and it has availability to clean the viruses, which harms our system. So everyone needs to be an antivirus program installed in their computers. This also helps us to determine and delete the virus. Always check for the latest definition and updates, because if you don’t update your antivirus definition, then you are not safe from the latest viruses which come day by day. So this step is strongly recommended, that update your antivirus when it’s available to take. If you ask me which is the best antivirus for a windows computer, then ‘Quick Heal Total Security’ is my recommendation. This antivirus contains many security features which used to secure your system.

7th Tip: Scanning Computer with Antivirus Every 7th Day
This is very important step for the next stage of security. I know some peoples regularly update their virus definitions in their antivirus, but they don’t do an important step which takes viruses out of the computer. If not, this will be harmful, so if you are a user from those, who updates their system regularly, then perform a Full System Scan, every 7 days or when you like (on a regular basis). My recommendation is to perform every Sunday because this is holiday and scans takes some time to complete (minimum 1/2hr, depends on the speed of computer).

8th Tip: Protecting The Internet Connection.
Protecting your internet connection is little bit easy step but a lot of helpful. You know how internet gained their popularity and how this is amazing for us. But consideration is securing our internet connectivity, because if we do not protect this, then this is possible that anyone can access to our network and anyone can misuse our internet data or computer data. There are a lot of tools which makes it easier to hack any network connection, so be smart and charge your security. Choose a strong password for your internet connection to tight your security using above methods, what I said in previous 2nd tip.

9th Tip: Browsing The Internet Safely.
Safe browsing simply means browse the internet safely. There are no any other needed things to do. In simple words you have only to browse that pages which is trustable. All the websites on the internet are not trustable, many of them are full with viruses, which access your system and destroys your files. So this is an advice to browse only those websites, which not looks anything like suspicious. There are also many tools which scan the website before visiting and then warn us. But you don’t have to do if you have a good antivirus installed such as ‘Quick Heal Total Security’. Because these antiviruses already have a safe browsing feature enabled.

10th Tip: Thinking Before Downloading Over The Net
Do you know 99% of viruses comes from the internet, because this is a largest source, where hackers leaves their viruses as a interesting downloadable file. And users download them and gets into trouble. So you mean is don’t download anything from the internet? No, my mean is to say only download files which are from the original source, think before downloading them that is this really going to help you, etc. So if I strongly need a file, which I found after the long searches and that is from the illegal source, then can I download or not?
Simply yes but before downloading that file your antivirus must have latest definition to catch if there is a virus. I recommend you to scan each file just after downloading them, whether they are with a virus. If your antivirus shows there is then don’t be silly deleting them. Because this is the matter of your privacy and your data protection.
